Quote: Albert Camus on the Risk of Publication

Everyday Life Sociology Quotes: "To create today is to create dangerously. Any publication is an act, and that act exposes one to the passions of an age that forgives nothing."

“Create”: To produce original content, informed by conscious ideas. It is inferable that Camus believes that creations are meant to be published, not for one’s own satisfaction only.

Exposes“: As in “exposure”, this is both a boon and a bane. The promise of being heard is matched by the possibility of being hurt.

“Passions”: Emotions, particularly anger.

“Forgives Nothing”: Angry people cannot entertain other points of view, and are thus ever ready to condemn people.

Albert Camus died in 1960, but his observation of the dangers of putting content out into the public is certainly relevant “today” as it was in his day. The nature of the danger has changed, though, ostensibly from political regimes to keyboard warriors now.

We cannot please everybody; this is perhaps more true than ever before. Those who are conscious about what they do will know well that clicking “Publish” is not for the faint of heart.
