Red Is For Respect

It’s been on my mind.

Yet it always seemed a stretch of imagination. My experiences are mainly limited to school, home and public transport. All I know about the Population White Paper is its Calibri font. Election, haze or riots, I often don’t know what to think. I might as well not think about them.

But I’m a Singaporean. This little red dot is my home. At some point, I must shake off my indifference. Because even if I blindfold my eyes and put on ear plugs, many things are still happening. They still affect me. They still affect us. They still cry for us to learn something from them and do something about them.

I want to understand, learn and do something for our society. This is my platform. Still, there are questions I have to answer. Why do I want to do this? What makes my blog relevant? Can I last the distance?

Post-2011, there is no lack of socio-political sites. But there seems to be a lot of anger, rejection and snide remarks. Being critical isn’t bad; it just isn’t a sustainable approach to solving problems. While emotion brings people into conversations, reason brings people into conversations with each other.

With respect.

My goals are modest, at least for now. This will be a blog that attempts to discuss social topics relevant to Singapore. I will try to keep it smart casual – analytical yet conversational – since progress can only be achieved with meaningful interactions. Frankly, I haven’t planned for my next post. I will let my values guide me.

I hope you find worth here. Then we can, together, see things more clearly, such that we focus on what we can (and cannot) do as individuals.

In making Singapore a better place.

Socio Empath

Hi, my name is Eugene. I am a Sociology graduate from the National University of Singapore. This blog is an invitation: To see our selves as colored by cultures, and to brighten the colors of our society. I seek to help you create freedom in everyday life, with empathy and the sociological imagination.
